My Peruvian Cutie

Welcome, and meet this beautiful kid, my godson David. Well, to be godson. David is the child of my friend and translator Paulina. She helped me out a lot when I was in Peru and we became friends instantly. Paulina and her husband Luiz have asked me and Floris if we would like to come back to Peru to be Davids official godparents. We feel very honoured of course! They will wait with baptizing David until we have come to Peru. So this means we have got to get some funding together for next year, so we can fly over and see our friends again. I would love to go back to Peru. There are friends who I would love to see again there; Paulina, Sylvia and her family, people from TMI and Kuntur, and of course the local people who live near the Inca road and who helped me with my research. Well, then got to go and finish my thesis soon...and if you know anyone who would like to sponsor us to get back to Peru, please leave a message! Or maybe you know what to do to help out...look left ;)

Welkom en maak kennis met dit prachtige ventje, mijn petekind David. Nou, te worden petekind dan. David is het kindje van mijn vriendin en vertaalster Paulina. Zij heeft me erg geholpen toen ik in Peru was en we waren vrienden vanaf het eerste moment dat we elkaar leerden kennen. Paulina en haar man Luiz hebben mij en Floris gevraagd of we terug zouden willen komen naar Peru om David zijn officiele peetouders te worden. We voelen ons zeer vereerd natuurlijk. Zij zullen wachten met het dopen van David totdat wij naar Peru komen. Dus, dit betekent dat we wat fondsen bij elkaar moeten krijgen voor volgend jaar, zodat we naar Peru kunnen vliegen en onze vrienden weer kunnen zien. Ik zou het erg gaaf vinden weer terug te gaan naar Peru. Er zijn vrienden daar die ik erg graag terug zou zien; Paulina, Sylvia en haar familie, de mensen van TMI en Kuntur. En natuurlijk de lokale mensen die bij de Inka route wonen en die me geholpen hebben bij mijn onderzoek. Ok dan, ik moet hard aan mijn scriptie gaan werken en het snel af maken...als je iemand weet die ons zou willen sponsoren om terug te kunnen naar Peru, laat svp een berichtje achter! Of misschien weet je al wat je kan doen om ons te helpen...kijk aan linkerkant ;)

Godmother.. :)
It's been a while, but I have not forgotten about the greatest time in my life!
My thesis is slowly progressing...very slowly. It's just that I am too much of a perfectionist, which ends up in having serieus writers-block. But these last weeks it's getting better!
Just wanted to spread the news that my dear friend Paulina (my tranlator) has given birth to a beautiful baby-boy the 11th of september. His name is David Alonso Oropeza Vidal. And I am his very proud madrina (godmother)...woohoo! I will put a picture of him up here as soon as I get one.

Weblog Information for 'strangers'...
Hello Everybody!
I have noticed that there are still a lot of people viewing my website and I was wondering if you understand what it is all about...as it is in Dutch... ; )
I am a student in Cultural Anthropology and have done research in Peru last year for my doctoral thesis. I went to Huaraz (8 hours from Lima to the north by bus) and did fieldwork in the Conchucos district from april untill june 2005. My research and thesis subject is the so-called Inka Naani Project of the Mountain Institute who work together with a small local organisation called Kuntur and the international conservation organization IUCN. This project combines conservation of a part of the Great Inca Route with local economic development and small scale tourism. My focus has been on the perspectives and values that the local people attach to this ancient route and how this is influenced by the project.
I made this website for my family and friends in the Netherlands while I was in Peru and it is written in journal style. As is usual on weblogs the first story on the top of the site is the one I have written last and if you scroll down you see the earlier posts. On the right a little bit lower you can click on the ARCHIVE button and will find posts on my research period. I have also written stuff on my travel-adventures through Peru, Bolivia and Chili.....however...all is written in DUTCH.
Luckily IMAGES speak an international language, so if you look on your right you will see alll kinds of pics. The first map is also the last I made and if you scroll down again you will find pictures of the Great Inca Road and the people who live there...also pics of Huaraz and the people I met there during my stay.

Terugkijkend......
Tja...tjee....wat een gekke, mooi tijd daar in Peru! Niet iedereen zal het misschien in de gaten hebben, maar het heeft veel met me gedaan. Ik denk er nog heeel vaak aan terug en ben af en toe nog steeds bezig mijn benen op de grond te zetten. Ik heb pas nog met Paulina via MSN en video kunnen praten en dat was geweldig! Helaas gaat het niet zo goed met haar en vind ik het lastig te bedenken hoe ik haar kan gaan helpen...verzin er wel wat op.
Wat deze reis zo bijzonder heeft gemaakt is dat het geen reis was; het was een thuisvoelen in een totaal vreemde omgeving, vrienden maken en het leven van anderen leren kennen en er van leren houden..!
Floris en ik zijn druk bezig met onze dia-show...nog muziek uit zoeken en alles aan elkaar plakken...ik hoop dat we daarmee jullie iets kunnen meegeven van onze ervaringen...al is het maar een druppel. Omdat jullie nog even moeten wachten heb ik alle digitale foto's nog eens uitgezocht en in mappen geplaatst op de site (aan de rechterkant). Kunnen jullie ondertussen alvast meegenietend onze herinneringen ophalen.
